Empowering Women and Girls

Advocacy

Along with YWCAs across the country, YWCA Greenwich continued to advocate on behalf of those who identify as women during the pandemic. We rallied the community to participate in the census and partnered with the League of Women Voters on voter registration efforts. We worked with local police on implementation of the dominant aggressor law passed in 2019, resulting in a decrease in the arrest of victims or "dual arrests" in domestic violence situations. In addition, we continued to work with the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, area legislators and local survivors to make the case for reform in the family court system, and with federal legislators on the reauthorization of key statutes such as the Violence Against Women Act.

Women Who Inspire Awards

Each year, YWCA Greenwich acknowledges and celebrates achievements of women in the community. Honorees are chosen for their significant contributions to their profession or work in support of a philanthropic cause. These women serve as role models and join a special sisterhood of over 500 YWCA Greenwich honorees. In January 2020 we were proud to honor Connie Blunden, Valerie A. Cooper, Dr. A.C. Demidont, Nancy Aborn Duffy, Julie Faryniarz, Diane P. Kelly, Rhonda Morley and Kate Fields Osman. Pitney Bowes was honored for their corporate commitment to empowering women.

YWCA Safe Space

After the start of the pandemic, YWCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Service staff created an Instagram Account to offer guidance on self-care, relationships and coping strategies.

YWCA Greenwich Safe Space posted original content that included videos, links and information to help followers stay centered and focused during the challenging months when so many were restricted to staying at home.

Positive Parenting

With parents and children working and learning at home, YWCA Counselors, Leslie Coplin and Robin Linder, created a video series called Practical Parenting to help caregivers, primarily women, deal with the stresses of parenting during the pandemic. Leslie and Robin provided tips and solutions to keeping the links of communication open, maintaining healthy, positive relationships and navigating the new normal.
